Bertie County Sheriff John Holley said officers with the Narcotics/Gang Unit of the sheriff’s office were involved in a high-speed chase before making the arrest. Complaints in the Mount Olive community led officers to investigate the activity of Alexander Leaner Williams on Church Lane. On June 11, Bertie County Sheriff’s Sgt. Matt Roebuck observed Williams driving a Toyota Avalon on White Oak Road near Windsor. Sgt. Roe buck knew Williams had a re voked driver’s license so he attempted to stop him at the intersection of School Road and Republican Road. Williams refused to stop, and attempted to flee and elude the officer. “The pursuit began in the area of Republican Road and Cow Track Road, and reached speeds of 105 miles per hour,’’ Sheriff Holley said. The sheriff said Williams turned off Republican Road onto Francis Mille Road and stopped his vehicle. Sgt. On Friday, May 18 Bertie Cor rectional Institute in Windsor dedicated the Sgt. Meggan L. Callahan Memorial Gazebo in memory of Sgt. Callahan. An inmate killed Sgt. Callahan on April 26, 2017. Sgt. Callahan’s family, the Divi sion of Prison’s senior adminis trators, local law enforcement, Bertie County Commissioners and other members were in at tendance for the ceremony. According to Dail, an admin istrator from the prison called him at WH. Basnight and Co. and inquired about obtaining materials for the project due to not having funding in the bud get. Dail began spreading the word through contractors and customers as they visited the store. “Someone would just tell us to donate a certain amount and charge it to their account. We had roughly 35 local individu als volunteer to donate to the project,” said Dail. In District 2, former three- term school board member Rickey Freeman has filed to seek the seat. It is currently held by Jo Davis Johnson, who has indicated she does not plan to seek a second term. In District 3, longtime school board member Emma Johnson has filed for another term on the board. In District 4, Norman M. Cher ry Sr. has filed for a full term on the board. Body found near where he was swimming STAFF REPORTS Bertie Ledger-Advance NORFOLK, VA.-A 12-year- old child went missing while swimming near Ocean View Pier Satur day. According to multiple media reports, Davieon Craig Askew of Bertie County was swimming with two friends when he went missing. WVEC TV reported all three swimmers began strug gling, and family mem bers were able to reach the other two children, but not Askew. Rescue crews using boats, helicopters and scuba divers searched the areas until 2 a.m. Sunday. The search re sumed at 7 a.m. Sunday morning. Askew is reportedly a seventh grader from Aulander, who went to Ocean View with his godmother and friends. WAVY reported Mon day evening officials re moved a body from near the Ocean View Fishing Pier, near where Askew went missing. The Bertie County Board of Education heard an update last week from Bertie Coun ty Schools Interim Ex ecutive Director of Op erations and Human Resources Karen Dam- eron.
